Wired Intercom Installation
Traditional wired intercom systems have been the cornerstone of residential and commercial access control for decades in the UK. While modern wireless systems are growing in popularity, thousands of buildings still rely on legacy intercom solutions, many of which remain fully functional with proper care.
At Jonathan Drew Electrical (JDE), we specialise in the maintenance, repair, installation, and upgrading of wired intercom systems, including both audio and video types, across a wide range of system architectures.

Understanding the Types of Wired Intercom Systems
A diverse group of passionate professionals, each bringing unique skills and experiences to drive innovation and excellence in every project we undertake.
4+n Analogue Systems
Wiring Type: 4 common wires shared between all handsets, plus 1 unique signal wire per flat
Typical Use: Audio-only systems in mid-century and early-2000s flats
Strengths: Reliable, simple, low maintenance
Limitations: Not scalable or video-capable without significant upgrades
2-Wire Bus Systems
Wiring Type: Twisted-pair shared wiring across all handsets
Typical Use: Used in newer analogue and digital systems, often with video
Strengths: Efficient for multi-unit buildings, supports video and data over the same two wires
Limitations: Limited compatibility between brands; wiring must be in good condition
IP-Based Intercom Systems
Wiring Type: Cat5e/Cat6 network cable (Ethernet), often with Power over Ethernet (PoE)
Typical Use: Modern developments or properties undergoing full system upgrades
Strengths: High-quality video, remote management, smart access integration
Limitations: Requires network infrastructure, potential for higher initial setup cost
